Blue Waves swim meet kicks off 2019-2020 swimming season
After a busy season last year and a successful one for Bahamian swimmers, the 2019 Bahamas Aquatics Federation (BAF) swimming season gets underway today at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatics Center with the 2019 Blue Waves swim meet.
Dellan Brown, head coach at the Blue Waves Club, said they had to extend the starting date due to Hurricane Dorian but swimmers and coaches are eager to get the season started.
There are 10 clubs participating in the meet. One of those clubs includes a team from the Turks and Caicos.
“Last year we increased our ranking with reference to nationals,” Brown said.
“For the Blue Waves, we are expecting great times. Like I said, we had to extend our season meaning we had more time to train and get ready for our first meet. With it being our first meet, we have more things in control like how we can tempo the training.”
His club is looking forward to the their very own 8-and-under boys swimmer Christon Joseph back in action in the pool. There is also Taj Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Jaida Mackey, Makhai Cartwright and Shiann Brooks.
“Spectators can expect fireworks happening in the pool,” Brown said.
“Each race will be tight with close competitive times.”
Brown received his Level II FINA (International Swimming Federation) Certification in August of this year.
The Blue Waves have been around for three years and climbed their way up the ladder on the national level. In 2017, they finished 10th overall. Last year, they placed ninth overall. They then moved up two spots at this year nationals in June to finish seventh overall.
The meet will have morning and evening sessions. The morning session is set to start at 9 a.m. and the evening session starts at 5 p.m.
Milo Butler is the main sponsor of the event.
Up next on the swimming calendar will be the Dolphins Swim Club meet set for Saturday, October 26.
This is the start to an Olympic year as Bahamian swimmers will look to qualify for next year’s Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, set for July 22-August 2, 2020.
