One of the more premier distance events in the country is less than a month away, set for the weekend of November 23-24, starting and ending at Arawak Cay right here in Nassau, The Bahamas.
The 7th Annual Bahamas Half, featuring a 13.1-mile half marathon, the half marathon relay, a 10-kilometer (10K) run and a 5-kilometer (5K) run, will be held at 6 a.m. on Sunday November 24, and the race expo will be held a day earlier, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the host hotel – the Courtyard by Marriott Nassau Downtown/Junkanoo Beach Hotel.
The event, staged by the Bahamas Roadmasters Club, is being sponsored by The Bahamas’ Ministry of Tourism, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Caribbean Bottling Co. Ltd., Bahamas Waste Ltd., Generali Worldwide – Bahamas, Bahamas Wholesale Agencies Ltd., Sun Tee EmbroidMe, Bahamas Welding and Fire, Carpet World and Top Notch Builders Ltd.
A total of $13,000 in cash prizes will be up for grabs – $5,000 for each half marathon winner (male and female), $1,000 for each second place finisher in the half marathon (male and female) and $500 for each third place finisher in the half marathon (male and female). Other top finishers will receive trophies for their respective categories.
“We’re looking to have about 600 people registered,” said Bahamas Roadmasters President Marcel “Bop” Major. “From year to year, we’ve really grown. Last year, we had close to 700 participants, but this year, that number will be reduced a bit because of what has happened in the country with the passing of Hurricane Dorian. People are trying to get back on their feet and we will be assisting in hurricane relief efforts as well. We want to make the race more impactful and in line with what is going on with hurricane relief in the country.”
Major said that the event will once again be in aid of two local charities – the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre and a reputable charity that is working with Hurricane Dorian Relief.
He said the event will be all-inclusive, catering to the entire family. Students can register for a cost of $20. The registration cost for the 5K (3.1 miles) race is $35, the 10K (6.2 miles) cost is $45, the price for the half marathon is $75, and the cost for the half marathon relay is $105. Online registration can be done on the website www.bahamashalf.com, or in person at Sun Tee Ltd. on East Shirley Street, at Palmdale Vision Centre, at Four Seasons Nursery on Infant View Road in Chippingham, at Touch Control Ltd. in the Old Fort Bay Town Centre, or by calling telephone number (242) 804-8595. Online registration closes Friday November 22, and registration may be available at packet pick-up at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel depending on event availability. No race day registration will be allowed. There will also be discounted rates at the host hotel, Courtyard by Marriott.
“Last year, we introduced a race expo at the host hotel and vendors were present. This year, we have the same thing set up and there will be about 10-15 vendors. We want to encourage everyone to come and pick up their race packets at the expo and patronize the vendors at the same time,” said Major. “We believe the activities surrounding the event will hype up the event and heighten the experience. There is an international flavor this year as we have about three Kenyans registered, and other international runners are coming as well. We expect to have O’Neil Williams back to defend his title.
“Overall, our membership has grown. There are quite a number of participants interested in joining the club and making distance running a hobby of theirs and part of their regular activities. An event like this could only heighten the interest in distance running in the country. We’re looking forward to another successful event.”
Major is encouraging interested persons to visit the club’s website at www.bahamashalf.com and the event’s Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/BHMarathon for more information regarding registration, packet pick-ups, and race day details. The entry fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
