Man murdered off Carmichael Road

A man was murdered yesterday, police said, pushing the murder count to 87 for the year.

According to reports, the victim and a woman arrived at their home on Ashley Close, off Hawk Ridge Road, Carmichael Road, after 1 a.m., when they were approached by a man who shot at the man several times before running away.

The victim was taken to hospital, but died shortly after arriving. The woman was not injured.

Last year’s murder tally was 91, the lowest count in nine years. Minister of National Security Marvin Dames said the goal was to have under 90 murders this year. However, when asked about concerns that the goal may not be met, Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson said the police can only do their best.

“This commissioner never said anything to the press about what he thinks the murder count will be at the end of the year, and so I’m policing, along with my team, according to the policing plan,” Commissioner Ferguson said.

“Every single day we turn up for duty, we’ve got to do our best to make sure that the Bahamian people are safe, and that is what I will continue to say. We will do our best to make sure that Bahamian people are safe.”

Ferguson maintained that his policing plan is going “extremely well”.

“As you would have seen over the last two months, [there were] some little bumps and little challenges in respect to shootings and armed robberies, but nothing that we cannot handle,” he said.

“And the Bahamian people need not be overly concerned about it. We have it in hand. I think if they’re watching, they can see a whole lot of officers on the street, and I’m sure you see that and that is really designed to go straight into the end of the year to make sure that our people have a nice Christmas, go out there and shop and really enjoy yourself.”
