Police shot at with AK-47
Three men opened fire on police with an AK-47 assault rifle and another firearm Sunday night after a separate shooting nearby, police reported.
Mobile Division and South Central Division officers were patrolling in the area of Yellow Elder Gardens around 8 p.m. when they heard gunshots being fired, according to police.
“As officers were proceeding to the area where the gunshots were heard, they encountered a Black Honda Stream with three men inside,” police said.
“The men, upon seeing the officers, discharged gunshots in the direction of the officers and sped away.
“Officers gave chase and a short distance away, the driver of the Honda Stream crash into a utility pole and into another police vehicle.”
Police said a search of the vehicle uncovered the AK-47 rifle and a .45 pistol.
Police also said a short time later, they discovered that a man had been shot in Yellow Elder Gardens.
Police said he was transported to hospital and was last listed in serious condition.
