Outstanding Bahamians honored at Government House
Sir Frederick Asa Hazlewood, prominent Bahamian businessman and president of John Bull Ltd., topped the list of the Queen’s Birthday honorees yesterday.
Hazlewood, who has been named Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (KCMG) for service to business, was honored along with 14 other Bahamians in a ceremony at Government House yesterday morning.
Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis highlighted the awardees as people who “devoted their full measure in service of their fellow-citizens”.
“Today’s honorees exemplify generosity of spirit and, indeed, the best of the Bahamian spirit,” he said.
“Over many decades, they have touched the lives of many thousands of Bahamians and others.”
Pastor Paul Adlai Scavella received the honor of Companion of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG) for services to religion and community.
Awarded Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the civil division was Godfrey Brian Thomas for his services to business.
Recipients of the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the civil division included: James Randolph Bain for his services to business; Kingsley Livingstone Black, for services to education and labor; Dr. Christian Elizabeth Darville, for her contributions to medicine and business; Julieth Naomi Minnis, for her services to health; Hugh Allison O’Brien, for services to the community and Olvin Peter Rees, for his services to business.
The British Empire Medal (BEM) was awarded to Brian Berkley Brown, for services to the community; Nesbitt Alphonso Higgins, for services to politics; Robert John Roberts, for services to the community; Reverend Dr. Ifill Earlin Russell, for services to religion and Daniel Olander Sumner, for services to sports.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Paul Rolle was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for his “exceptional contribution” to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
