Union, resort make progress on new industrial agreement
Two weeks after members of the Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union (BHCAWU) demonstrated outside the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island, Chairman of the Bahamas Hotel Employers Association Russell Miller has signed off on an additional four sections of a new industrial agreement.
“We continue to make strong progress on negotiating a new labor contract with the union. We have mutually agreed to and signed 40 of the 48 non-financial sections of the agreement,” Miller said in a statement yesterday.
“We are pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the injunction. We believe labor action is not only unlawful, but also unwarranted while BHEA is fully engaged in negotiating with the union with the shared goal of a signed agreement.”
Russell was due to sign off on 36 of the 48 sections of the new agreement that were mutually agreed upon on the same day union members demonstrated.
Island Hotel Company Limited, which operates Atlantis resort, was granted an injunction against the union last week barring union members from picketing at the resort.
Union members had voted to strike after continued difficulties in negotiating a new industrial agreement with their employers.
“The injunction does not prevent negotiations from continuing. All negotiations to date regarding the industrial agreement have taken place off-property and will continue to do so,” Miller said yesterday.
Now both parties – BHCAWU and Island Hotel Company Ltd. – are awaiting a March 10 hearing on the matter.
The union is frustrated with the lengthy process to reach a new industrial agreement.
