Jack Thompson appointed secretary to GG

Jack Thompson.

Permanent Secretary Jack Thompson has been re-appointed secretary to Governor General Cornelius A. Smith as of December 2019, he confirmed yesterday.

In September, shortly after the passing of Hurricane Dorian, Thompson was one of the officials Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis appointed to head hurricane relief and redevelopment efforts on Abaco.

The other officials included Director of Aviation and former Chairman of the National Insurance Board Algernon Cargill and former Senate President Katherine Forbes-Smith – who officially resigned from the Senate last month in order to focus on the relief efforts, according to her resignation letter.

Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Management and Reconstruction Iram Lewis told The Nassau Guardian yesterday that the move was not a sudden decision.

“He was aware that his move [to disaster recovery] wasn’t permanent,” Lewis said.

“Once the authority was constituted, we had more boots on the ground and he came back to Nassau.”

After Thompson, Cargill and Forbes-Smith had been appointed, a Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, Management and Reconstruction and Disaster Reconstruction Authority were created for the management and oversight of reconstruction in disaster zones, with John Michael Clarke being appointed the authority’s chairman and Lewis having oversight as the minister responsible.

According to Lewis, Thompson’s position is expected to be filled shortly and an announcement of the new appointment is expected to be made by the end of this week.

While he did not provide details, he said that the ministry has “two strong prospects” for who Thompson’s successor will be.
