The Bahamas defeats Barbados to remain alive in qualifying
With a 3-0 win over Barbados on Monday, Team Bahamas moved into the quarterfinals of the World Junior Tennis (WJT) Girls 14s North/Central America and Caribbean Pre-Qualifying Tournament, currently underway at the Parque del Este in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
In singles, Sierra Rodgers prevailed over Barbados’ top player Shonte Sargeant in a match that lasted over two hours. She won in three tough sets, 6-4, 4-6 and 7-5. In the second singles match, Saphirre Ferguson took down Barbados’ number two player Jolie Philips, 6-2 and 6-2. In doubles, cousins Saphirre and Breann Ferguson teamed up to beat the Bajan duo of Sargeant and Nadia Da Costa, 6-1 and 6-0.
The Bahamas now has a 2-1 win-loss record in the standings, and will face the host nation Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals today, starting at 9 a.m.
In the other quarterfinal matches, Guatemala will take on Costa Rica, El Salvador will battle Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago will challenge Panama. The other countries that participated were Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Jamaica, Suriname, Curaçao and Honduras. Teams are seeking to advance to the regional final against the United States, Canada and Mexico, which will be held from April 23-25 on Canadian soil.
In The Bahamas’ opening match, they defeated fourth seeded Antigua & Barbuda. Breann Ferguson won her opening match, 6-1 and 6-2, but Rodgers lost her singles match, 6-3 and 6-1. In doubles, the team of Saphirre and Breann Ferguson won in three tough sets, 6-7, 6-4 and 10-6.
On day two of competition, The Bahamas lost to Costa Rica. In singles, Saphirre Ferguson lost, 6-0 and 6-0. Breann Ferguson also lost in singles play, 6-0 and 6-0, and in doubles the team of Saphirre and Breann Ferguson lost, 6-0 and 6-1.
The three-member team is coached by Marion Bain.
