The Valley Boys will no longer participate in parades organized by the Junkanoo Corporation of New Providence (JCNP), the JCNP announced in a press statement today.
This comes as Parade Management Team Chairman Anthen Mortimer announced the Shell Saxons Superstars as the official winner of the 2019 Boxing Day Junkanoo Parade.
The Valley Boys, who were declared the unofficial winners dropped to second place with 81.44 points, after a three-point penalty.
Even without that penalty however, the Valley Boys’ score would still only be good enough for second place.
The JCNP expounded on the Valley Boys decision in its statement.
“On Friday past the JCNP received an ultimatum from the Valley Boys Junkanoo group stating that if the IRC (Independent Review Committee) and its subsequent recommendations are allowed, they will no longer participate in the upcoming parades that [are] managed by the JCNP,” the statement reads.
“Today, the Valley Boys followed up by submitting electronically a letter of resignation with immediate effect. While the JCNP is disappointed in the Valley Boys’ decision, the JCNP wishes them the best in their future endeavors.”
Valley Boys Chairman Brian Adderley said the process that led to the results of the Boxing Day parade being overturned was unfair.
“We no longer have any confidence in the JCNP to manage any fair parades. We don’t expect to win all the parades, but we don’t expect to be cheated,” Adderley added.
With a score of 85.01, the Saxons took home Best Step Down Costume and Best Lead Costume.
The Valley Boys won Best Music, Best Shirley Street Performance, Best Banner and Best Off the Shoulder.
Genesis came in third with 76.71 points after a three-point penalty.
One Family, which won best Overall Performance, Best Costume and Best Choreography, finished fourth with 74.19 points after a 12-point penalty.
Roots finished fifth with 69.31 points, after a 10-point penalty.
The overall results from the 2020 New Year’s Junkanoo Parade remain unchanged.
