Health of all of the Bahamians in China is good, ambassador assures

The Chinese government has sent a task force to Wuhan, China, to assist Bahamians and other foreigners with their day-to-day needs following the outbreak of the coronavirus, Chinese Ambassador Huang Qinguo said yesterday.

“The health condition of all of the Bahamians in China is good,” Huang told reporters at a press conference at the Chinese embassy on Shirley Street.

“The Chinese government is taking measures to take care of all of them. The Foreign Ministry of China [has] sent a task force to Wuhan to take care of the foreigners in that city. Also, the local government is providing daily necessities to those foreigners in China, in Wuhan.”

The ambassador said the Chinese government attaches “great importance” to the safety of foreigners in China.

He said the government has “tried its best to address the difficulties they face by keeping them informed about the epidemic through various channels, including through foreign representative institutions”.

“Also, the Chinese government attaches importance to the basic needs of everyday life of foreign nationals, and offered them epidemic prevention supplies,” Huang said.

“Now the security and basic needs of the foreign students are safeguarded.”

A new coronavirus strain, recently named COVID-19, first appeared in Wuhan in late December. Since then, over 1,100 people have died from the virus, and there have been over 46,000 confirmed cases.

“Overnight, 14,840 cases, including 13,332 clinically diagnosed cases, were reported from Hubei,” the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a situation report yesterday.

“This is the first time China has reported clinically diagnosed cases in addition to laboratory confirmed cases. For consistency, we report here only the number of laboratory confirmed cases.

“WHO has formally requested additional information on the clinically diagnosed cases, in particular when these have occurred in the course of the outbreak and whether suspect cases were reclassified as clinically diagnosed cases.”

There have been reported cases in 24 other countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Yesterday, Huang said China is working to contain the potential spread of the virus to other countries and regions.

“It has strengthened management and control on overseas traveling of Chinese citizens and called on the Chinese people to take up their social responsibilities to help prevent further spread of the disease,” he said.

“The Chinese government has the firm resolve and has taken vigorous measures to prevent the spread of the disease.”

Seven Bahamians, who recently returned from China, are being quarantined, according to the health minister.
