HOYTES Geneva Rutherford Classic off and running in Freeport

The HOYTES Geneva Rutherford Girls Basketball Classic got underway on Wednesday and will run through Saturday at the St. George’s High School Gymnasium in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

The Helping Our Youth Through Education and Sports (HOYTES) organization wishes to bring sponsors, government agencies, athletes, sports administrators and the public together for a couple of days in a remedial and therapeutic effort to assist in the aftermath of the destruction of Hurricane Dorian that affected the northern Bahamas.

The HOYTES Geneva Rutherford Girls Basketball Classic got underway on Wednesday and will run through Saturday at the St. George’s High School Gymnasium in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

The classic is an all-female basketball undertaking for student-athletes in the junior and senior divisions. A mandatory requirement is that the athlete be registered and presently attending a secondary institution of learning recognized and certified by the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology. The tournament is recognized and fully supported by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.

Comprising the field will be squads out of New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco. From Abaco, Grand Cay All-Age will attend the tournament. The New Providence schools will consist of C.V. Bethel, C.R. Walker, Freedom Baptist Academy, Prince William and Anatol Rodgers; and schools from the host island will be Bishop Michael Eldon, Eight Mile Rock, Jack Hayward High, Mary Star of the Sea, Sister Mary Patricia Russell, St. George’s, Sunland Baptistand Tabernacle Baptist Academy.

There will be two pools in both divisions – Juniors ‘A’ and ‘B’; and Seniors I and II. The format will be that of pool round-robin in the preliminary round, with the top four teams entered into a cross pool knockout stage, and then on to the semis and championships.
