Man committed suicide with explosives, coroner finds
The death of a retired marine demolition expert in 2018 was unanimously ruled a suicide by a coroner’s jury.
Gardner Dutton Young, 89, blew himself up at his home on Bailey Drive in Coral Harbour on September 25, 2018.
Young, the original owner of Diver’s Haven, had fallen into depression due to his failing health, the inquest heard.
His caretaker had left him watching TV in the pool house when she went to feed the horses.
When she returned two hours later, he was dead.
Police saw two blasting caps and wires leading to a battery near his body.
The explosion left Young’s face disfigured.
Coroner Jeanine Weech-Gomez and a five-member jury heard the inquest.
