Dames suggests King soon to be confirmed as RBDF chief

Minister of National Security Marvin Dames yesterday suggested Acting Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) Commodore Dr. Raymond King will soon be confirmed in the position.

RBDF Commodore Tellis Bethel was placed on leave in October.

Yesterday, while on “Darold Miller Live” on ZNS, Dames was asked whether King will be confirmed as the new commodore. He replied, “Well, hopefully. We don’t want to find ourselves in the position where we have an acting at the top for a very long time.”

In October, Dames told The Nassau Guardian that “no one knows what’s next” for Bethel after he completed his mandatory three-month leave.

He has insisted that Bethel had not been fired.

The Guardian understands that Bethel has accumulated vacation of just under a year.

An internal memorandum – dated October 15, 2019, and signed by Captain Adrian B. Chriswell – revealed that King will serve as acting commander of the RBDF until January 2020, when Bethel was initially expected to return to work.

On October 6, the Cabinet Office announced King’s appointment as deputy commander.

At the time, the decision to remove Bethel had raised eyebrows among some observers given that the RBDF is instrumental in Hurricane Dorian relief efforts on Grand Bahama and Abaco, where security concerns on the ground persisted in the immediate aftermath.
