65-year-old accused of sex crimes

A 65-year-old accused of sex crimes against a 12-year-old girl was yesterday remanded to prison.

Calvin Sweeting Sr., of Mangrove Cay, Andros, faced charges of unlawful sexual intercourse and indecent assault when he made his initial court appearance before Magistrate Shaka Serville.

The charges stem from an incident that allegedly happened on Andros on July 28, 2022.

Sweeting, who is represented by Ian Cargill and Ryszard Humes, was not required to enter pleas to the charges.

Cargill suggested that the indecent assault charge was subsumed in the unlawful sexual intercourse matter and, therefore, duplicitous.

Sweeting’s matter has been adjourned to November 15 for the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment that will send the case to the Supreme Court. He was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services, however, Serville advised him of his right to seek bail before the Supreme Court.
