It looks like it will be a promising year for at least seven Bahamian professional baseball players who made the 2020 top 30 prospects list for their respective Major League Baseball (MLB) teams.
The seven players are: Kristian Robinson (Arizona Diamondbacks); Jasrado ‘Jazz’ Chisholm (Miami Marlins); D’Shawn Knowles (Los Angeles Angels); Tahnaj Thomas (Pittsburgh Pirates); Trent Deveaux (Angels); Lucius Fox (Tampa Bay Rays) and Keithron Moss (Texas Rangers).
Robinson and Chisholm are ranked in the 2020 top 100 prospects list.
Robinson is ranked number one for Diamondbacks after playing 69 games in the minors last season. The outfielder had 72 hits from 255 at-bats. He finished with 14 home runs, 13 doubles and two triples. His batting average was .282. The towering figure was also able to steal 17 bases and finished with 51 runs batted in (RBIs).
Last season, he played in the A short for the Hillsboro Hops and finished the season in the A full level for the Kane County Cougars.
In addition, he is ranked at number 43 on the top 100 prospects list in the MLB.
Chisholm is on the cusp of going into the majors. He is ranked at number three on the Marlins’ top 30 list. He is ranked at number 66 on the MLB’s top 100 prospects list.
The shortstop is hoping to make the Marlins major roster, having been invited to their Spring Training. He has played in seven games thus far with a batting average of .273. to go with two RBIs in the Grapefruit League. He had gone 3-for-11 and scored two runs.
The 22-year-old spent last season at the Double-A Jackson and moved on to the Double-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp after he was traded from the Diamondbacks to the Marlins in August 2019.
In the 112 games he played last year, Chisholm hit 21 home runs and batted an average of .220, thanks in part to a .284 average after the trade.
He finished with 54 RBIs and showed his speed when he stole 16 bases.
Knowles is ranked in the top 10 for the Angels organization coming in a number nine.
The outfielder appeared in 64 games for the Orem Owlz in the Rookie League. He finished with a batting average of .241.
Knowles also had four home runs, 11 doubles and four triples. He had five stolen bases.
The 19-year-old went 61-for-253 and scored 38 runs.
Thomas is the lone pitcher amongst the seven Bahamian top prospects. He is ranked at number 13 on the list.
Deveaux is ranked at number 15 for the Angels. He finished last season with a batting average of .238 and seven home runs.
In 244 at-bats, he had 58 hits to finish with 42 runs.
Playing in the Grapefruit League for the Rays is Fox who is ranked at number 25.
The shortstop has played in eight games in the Grapefruit League for his Rays with a batting average of .273. So far, he is 3-for-11 with one run and four RBIs.
Rounding out the Bahamian prospects is Moss who is ranked at number 30 for the Rangers.
The 18-year-old finished last season with a batting average of .308 and scored 27 runs in 34 games. The infielder went 37-for-120 to finish with two home runs.
It is a promising season for the Bahamian players as they look to get called-up by their respective teams over the course of the season.
