Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) announced yesterday that its customers could continue to face landline, mobile and internet outages on New Providence “due to the loss of commercial power and excessive flooding”.
BTC’s mobile services in Abaco, Grand Bahama, the Berry Islands and Bimini, have also been compromised as a result of Hurricane Dorian, according to a BTC press release.
Cable and Wireless Communications (C&W) CEO Inge Smidts said in the release that BTC’s teams are working to get services back up. Cable and Wireless is BTC’s parent company.
“Our teams are working around the clock to restore services as quickly as possible, as we know how important it is for families and friends to connect with each other especially during these trying times,” he said.
“Together we will recover and rebuild. We stand with the people and government of The Bahamas.”
Another release from BTC with information about its recovery efforts explained that the company’s Local Network Response and Recovery Center (LNRRC) revealed that mobile services are available in the Cherokee Sound, Bahama Palm, Schooner Bay, Sands Cove and Sandy Point areas of Abaco.
“Landline services are up in Cherokee Sound and Green Turtle Cay,” the release noted. “Landline and mobile services are compromised on the rest of the island.”
According to the release, in Grand Bahama, mobile services are available in West End and Eight Mile Rock; and in Cat Cay, Alice Town and Porgy Bay, Bimini.
BTC added that customers with fiber-optic cable could experience “landline and internet outages if their home is not equipped with backup power”.
