Champions crowned in GSSSA volleyball

The 2019 Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) volleyball season climaxed with four champions crowned on Friday at the A.F. Adderley Gymnasium.

 Senior boys

C.R. Walker 2, Government High 1

The C.R. Walker Senior High School Knights needed three sets to defeat the pennant-winning Government High School (GHS) Magic for the GSSSA senior boys volleyball title.

The score was tied at 24 in the first set, but the Knights persevered, going on to win that set 28-26.

The score was the same in the second set, but this time it would be the Magic who closed it out, winning 26-24.

The third set was also competitive as the Knights were pushed to the limit. They eventually won 15-13 to win the match and the senior boys title.

The final score was 28-26, 24-26 and 15-13 in favor of the Knights. 

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the series was Stephon McKenzie from C.R. Walker.

The C.R. Walker Knights won the GSSSA senior boys volleyball title, defeating the GHS Magic two sets to one on Friday. They won 28-26, 24-26 and 15-13.

 Senior girls

Anatol Rodgers 2, C.I. Gibson 0

This game did not need a third set as the Anatol Rodgers Senior High School Timberwolves dominated the C.I. Gibson Rattlers in straight sets to win the senior girls title.

The champions won easily over the Rattlers 25-13 in the first set. They dominated the second set as well, winning 25-10 to take the match and the senior girls title back to Anatol Rodgers.

The Timberwolves’ Lavern Armbrister was named the MVP, leading her team to the comfortable 25-13 and 25-10 win.

Junior boys

C.H. Reeves 2, S.C. McPherson 0

It was an easy two-set win for the C.H. Reeves Junior High School Raptors as they took advantage of the S.C. McPherson Junior High Sharks.

They dominated the Sharks in the first set, 25-12. In the second set, the Sharks tried to give the Raptors a fight, but the Raptors prevailed 25-21.

The Raptors Jay-Onn Joseph was named the MVP, leading the Raptors to the 25-12 and 25-21 win.

Junior girls

H.O. Nash 2, A.F. Adderley 1

The junior girls title was decided in a third set between the H.O. Nash Lions and the A.F. Adderley Tigers.

The Lions won the first set 25-21, and lost the second set by that same score.

At 14-14 in the third set, the pennant-winning Lions took command, scoring the final two points of the set and the championship. 

The Lions’ Shernell Stewart was the MVP, leading her team to the 25-21, 21-25 and 16-14 win.
