Charging for plastic bags is a bad idea

Dear Editor,

We of the Kingdom Government Movement (KGM) take issue with the government of The Bahamas allowing the merchants to prey on the citizens of The Bahamas as it relates to the single-use plastic ban.

It is unconscionable that the government stands by while the merchants charge consumers for bags to exit their stores with purchased goods.

It is a known fact that these bags are factored into the cost of goods for every retail establishment.

Every company factored in these bags as a cost to their bottom line. Because these bags are no longer being used, the cost of goods should be reduced, resulting in savings.

However, it has increased the cost of the product to the consumer.

The consumer affairs division is therefore derelict in its duty to protect the Bahamian consumer.

The KGM continues to advocate for a change in all of these failing government systems that are not in the best interest of the citizens of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
