COVID testing rate 16 percent positive

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Delon Brennen said yesterday The Bahamas has a COVID positivity rate of about 16 percent.

There were 4,704 COVID tests completed up to August 5.

Seven hundred and fifty-one tests returned positive during that same period.

He said a daily positivity rate has not been worked out.

“There are more than 15,000 tests currently available,” Brennen said.

“Expansion is continuous… Testing is available in all islands where there are Ministry of Health facilities.”

When asked which islands do not have facilities, Brennen replied, “Not sure. There are about 100 across all the islands. We have none on private islands.”

He said the government is not conducting regular testing of police, defence and immigration officers.

Brennen said there is testing for those individuals “upon need”.

Up to last night, 4,814 tests were completed.

There are 761 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in The Bahamas.

Six hundred and fifty-four cases are active.
