An American cruise ship passenger accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the Disney Magic will remain in The Bahamas unless freed on bail.
Stan Maurice Grant Johnson, 56, of Pennsylvania, appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney on Thursday charged with the December 6 rape of a 21-year-old woman.
Johnson was not required to enter a plea to the charge when he made his initial court appearance and was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Corrections as the magistrate lacks jurisdiction to grant bail for the offense.
However, Johnson can seek bail in the Supreme Court.
He next returns to court on February 28, when it is expected that the matter will be transferred to the Supreme Court for trial.
Thomas Evans, QC, appears for Johnson. Inspector Philip Davis prosecuted.
