Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Brave Davis yesterday called for the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) to reverse its decision to not renew the contracts of some doctors in the public health care system.
Davis said the move is a “stupid” one in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic when the healthcare system needs as many healthcare workers as possible.
“These are the men and women who have studied and worked and are ready to risk their own health and lives to save ours,” he said during a press conference at PLP headquarters.
“The firing of Bahamian doctors during a pandemic is stupid and immoral and the government needs to reverse that decision immediately.”
Davis added, “How could you fire doctors during a health emergency when you should be reinforcing our front lines instead?”
His comments came a day after the Bahamas Doctors Union (BDU) released a statement expressing its disappointment that some doctors are being rendered jobless as the PHA has indicated plans to make some positions redundant and not renew contracts.
The BDU also took issue with medical interns not having guaranteed jobs after their internships ended in June.
In a statement in response, the PHA said the one-year internship period commenced by doctor interns on July 1, 2019, ends on June 30, 2020.
The PHA said the one-year internship arrangement is a requirement for licensure.
