Davis: PLP believes in freedom of expression

Amid concerns over a planned LGBT Pride Week in October 2020, Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Brave Davis said yesterday that the party believes in freedom of expression.

Bahamas Christian Council (BCC) President Bishop Delton Fernander said that the organization will not support any such event and will host an opposing rally to make its stance known.

Davis said, “I think the Christian Council, they have, just as everyone, the freedom of expression.

“And so, as the Christian Council have freely expressed themselves in relation to the issue, others likewise can too.

“So, there is a right, and our constitution guarantees freedom of expression, freedom to form our own opinions, and we ought to be able to do that without fear of reprisals, victimizations or any other of the penal consequences that should follow.”

Davis was asked to respond to the Pride Week event and Fernander’s response.

The local LGBT community announced earlier this year that it plans to host a Pride Parade next year. Organizers have noted that the event will be private to ensure the safety of its participants. Pineridge MP Frederick McAlpine, who is also a pastor, last week called for a national discussion on same-sex unions.

The government has yet to speak out on Pride Bahamas’ plans or the BCC’s response to them.

Emphasizing that The Bahamas is a country with “Christian values”, the BCC said homosexuality is in “direct contradiction to the teachings of the Bible”.

However, Pride Bahamas Organizer Alexus D’Marco insisted that the event will go on in spite of the controversy. She said the event next year is aimed to be “a new start for our country” as it relates to the treatment of the LGBTI community.
