DPM: Govt working to allay concerns about new customs online portal

In the next week to two weeks, the government will have resolved issues pertaining to the new Click2Clear online portal now being used by the Customs Department, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest said yesterday, adding that the phased rollout of the system is still being carried out and requires the attention of all Bahamians.

Turnquest, who was speaking at a press conference announcing the launch of an education campaign about Click2Clear and the launch of a drive to get Bahamians registered on the portal, said there has already been some “anxieties” about the new system expressed by some business people.

However, Turnquest said the government is working with the various chambers of commerce and business people to allay any concerns that have arisen. 

“There has been some concern from various brokers on coming up to speed with the new system,” he said.

“In the coming week, we will share whatever resolution we come up with. It’s a change and so people are getting used to a new process and the requirements of the system and it is causing some anxieties.”

Superintendent of Customs Tyrone Sands, during the press conference yesterday, said that it is imperative for all Bahamians who purchase anything that is then brought into the country or ship anything out of the country, to register on the Click2Clear portal.

“The law requires that everyone is to register on Click2Clear if they import goods into The Bahamas, whether you are an individual who shops online, you send or receive documents internationally, whether you use a customs broker or freight forwarder to bring in goods, all importers and exporters must register on Click2Clear,” he said.

“We have to emphasize this point because many people do not think of themselves as importers and exporters. Once your name appears on a manifest, your name has to be in the system for those goods to be cleared.”

Sands said there is a one-time process for registration and that residents will need a smart card from the National Insurance Board to register on the portal.
