Along Life's Road

Fearfully, wonderfully and beautifully made

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. – Psalm 139:14

Discouragement accompanied with low self-esteem in many cases, drive many to the edge of ending life’s journey, but praise be to God, hope intervenes and saves not only the day, but their very life and souls.

A story is told of an 11-year-old boy who always went with his pastor father delivering Christian tracts. One night it rained so heavily that the father decided not to brave the weather, but the son was determined to go. The father finally consented and the youngster went out in the rain and gave away all but one of the tracts because the streets were all empty. Nearing home, he decided to knock on a door but got no answer. He kept knocking louder and louder until finally an elderly woman half opened the door. The young boy gave her the tract and told her God really loved her. She thanked him and closed the door.

On the Sunday following, during worship service, the pastor altered the order of service and asked if anyone present had a testimony they wanted to share. From the back of the church, an elderly woman walked to the front and told of how she was saved from committing suicide because a little boy continued to knock on her door. She had already stood on the chair and put the noose around her neck but the continuous knocking caused her to see what it was all about.

She said at her door was a boy with the sweetest, most innocent face she had ever seen who handed her a tract and told her that God loved her. She had the church in tears, including the pastor, as the little boy was his son whom he had been trying to discourage from going out in the rain.

We have begun the period of Lent as observed in the Christian church. It is 40 days leading up to the reason why God sent his only begotten son into the world to die for our sins and whosoever believeth on him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

God invested so much of himself in creating us, as we are made in the likeness of his image. The psalmist David exclaims that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are so busy doing this and doing that, going here and going there, grabbing this and grabbing all, that so often, life ends and we are not aware of who we really are and the purpose of us inhabiting this global village.

Sometime ago, I went to assist someone and gave them a copy of a letter that came from their office. They told me that they could not accept it as they needed the original copy. I was about to leave but I said to the lady – look at me; can you see me? And she said “yes”. I asked her if she realized that I was a copy and made in the image and likeness of God and I had no way of getting the original for her and that she must accept me as the copy.

It is certain that by many of our errant ways, we have not the foggiest idea as to how wonderfully and fearfully the human body is put together.

My soul is bursting with new zeal to continue to serve and worship this mighty God of all creation. He still is the God of all creation, mankind, the earth, the atmosphere, the gold, the silver, the oil, all the minerals, precious stones and all the wealth.

Are you not happy, in spite of little setbacks, to be a part of the family of God this Lenten season, born of his spirit and washed in his blood? My soul shouts with joy and thankfulness for being fearfully and wonderfully and beautifully made.
