Fishermen who pleaded guilty to prohibited fishing placed on probation

Three Bahamian fishermen were placed on probation for violating COVID-19 fishing regulations.

Ralph Joseph, 20, of Farrington Road; Randy Thompson, 27, of Sandy Point, Abaco; and Leander Williams, 56, of Potters Cay, were among 12 people rescued after a boat capsized off Chub Cay on September 12.

The men told police that their fishing boat capsized after they picked up the stranded Haitian and Jamaican migrants. They were handed over to immigration.

Joseph, Thompson and Williams pleaded guilty to prohibited fishing at their arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney on Wednesday.

They admitted to fishing with more than two people in violation of rules designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

McKinney sentenced them to probation for two years.

A probation violation will result in a six-month prison sentence, if they don’t pay a $1,500 fine.
