Foul play not suspected in inmates’ death

Police don’t suspect foul play in the deaths of two prison inmates, according to Coroner Jeanine Weech-Gomez.

One inmate, who was serving time for murder, was found dead in the dorm in the Maximum Security section of the facility.

An inquest will be held to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death, she said.

However, a date for the hearing has not been set.

Neither prison officials nor police announced the inmate’s death to the media.

A relative of another inmate contacted The Nassau Guardian since this is the second inmate death in as many weeks.

In that case, Weech-Gomez said the inmate died two weeks ago at the hospital.

Weech-Gomez said the inmate’s medical history was well known and he was taken to hospital several days before he died.

As a result, Weech-Gomez said, an inquest is not necessary.

The Guardian attempted to reach Commissioner of Corrections Charles Murphy for comment; however, he did not return calls up to press time.
