The Georgetown Hoyas opened their 2019 Foreign Tour by rolling over the Commonwealth Bank Giants 103-77 after shooting 51.2 percent from the field in the Bahamas Basketball Federation (BBF) Summer of Thunder action at the Kendal G.L Isaacs National Gymnasium on Monday, August 12.
Six Hoyas scored in double figures with sophomore guard James Akinjo scoring a team-high 16 points.
The Giants’ Mark St. Fort led the way for the Giants as he scored a game-high 18 points.
This was the Hoyas’ first game in the Summer of Thunder exhibition.
In the first two minutes of the game, the Hoyas took over and went on a 10-0 run. James scored seven straight points before the Giants’ Michael Bain Jr. made a layup to cut into the lead.
At the end of the first quarter, the Hoyas took control with a 30-18 lead.
The Hoyas were able to continue scoring points in the second quarter as they took a comfortable 25-point lead with the score at 50-25 with four minutes left in the second quarter. The Giants were able to cut the lead down to 23 points on a dunk by Livingston Munnings with 20 seconds left in the first half. The score was 54-31 in favor of the Hoyas.
At the intermission, the Hoyas held onto that score line.
By the end of the third quarter the Giants had no answer for the Hoyas, who were up 83-51.
In the fourth quarter, the Hoyas held their largest lead of 35 points on a Jahvon Blair three-pointer with 8:50 left in the quarter. They were up 90-55 at that point.
The Giants were able to slash the lead down to 26 points to end the game at 103-77.
The Hoyas’ center Omer Yurtseven flirted with a double-double as he scored 10 points and pulled down nine boards. Six of those boards were on the offensive side.
Apart from Akinjo and Yurtseven, Terrell Allen (11 points); Blair and Jamorko Pickett (14); and Mac McClung (15) scored in double figures.
Jackson Jacob was the only other Giants player in double figures with 12 points.
New York Knicks and Hoyas legend Patrick Ewing, the Hoyas’ head coach, had his team connecting on 10-of-20 shots from beyond the arc.
The Hoyas return to the court tonight when they play the Raw Talent Elite out of The Bahamas at 7 p.m. at the Kendal G.L Isaacs National Gymnasium. The Hoyas close their 2019 Foreign Tour on Thursday, August 15, when they play the Bahamas Senior National Men’s team.
For the Giants, they will play the University of Memphis Tigers this afternoon at the Grand Ballroom at Baha Mar Resort Convention Center. The game is set to start at 5 p.m.
The 5 p.m. game at the Kendal G.L Isaacs National Gymnasium will see the Bahamas Senior National Men’s team play the Texas Tech University Raiders.
