Giants remain unbeaten in NPBA action

Dylan Musgrove and Anderias Black scored 25 points apiece for the Your Essential Store (YES) Giants as they took down the Sports Center Elites, 96-91, to remain unbeaten through 10 regular seasons in New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) Division II action while the Patmore Rebels took down the Fort Charlotte Defenders, 82-72, in division one action. Both games were played at the A.F. Adderley Gymnasium on Wednesday night.


Division II

Giants 96, Elites 91

The Giants led this game from the opening whistle to the final buzzer, opening as much as a 31-point lead in the victory. The win gave the Giants a 10-0 win-loss record on the season, and they lead the Godfrey McQuay Division in NPBA Division II action comfortably. The Elites dropped to 3-6 on the season in the Godfrey McQuay Division.

Anderias Black finished the night with a double-double as he matched game-high honors with 25 points and pulled down a game-high 19 rebounds in the win. Dario McKenzie led the Elites with 22 points and 10 boards.

It was a dominant performance from the Giants as they jumped out to a quick 14-2 run in the first quarter. The first quarter ended 26-15 in favor of the Giants.

In the second quarter, the Giants managed to keep a double-digit lead, preventing the Elites from going on a run.

The closest the Elites got in the second quarter was seven points when Ricardo Taylor made a three-point shot to cut the lead to 35-28 with 4:22 remaining.

Brandon Strachan’s lay-up 20 seconds later sparked an 11-2 scoring run that ended with the Giants up 46-30 at the half. The Giants were poised to record a blowout.

After a dominating third quarter that saw the Giants take a 76-48 lead into the fourth, the Elites came storming back.

They outscored the Giants 43-20 in the fourth quarter but they ran out of time as the Giants held on to win 96-91.

The Giants out-rebounded the Elites, 58-47, in the game as they used their size to dominate in the paint and control the boards. The Giants finished with 64 points in the paint compared to 44 for the Elites.

Division two action continues tonight with the Triple K Stampers (2-8) taking on the Sun Oil Rockets (8-2). That game will get underway at 7 p.m.

Division I

Rebels 82, Defenders 72

The Rebels improved to 2-7 on the season when they took down the Defenders 82-72 who dropped to 1-10.

Martin Conliffe scored a game-high 26 points for the Rebels and got help from Jason Cambridge and Theo Ferguson who had 16 points apiece in the win.

Gregory Seymour had a double-double in the loss with 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Defenders.

The Rebels led by as many as 21 points in the win, but the Defenders stayed within striking distance.

Holding a slim 13-11 lead with 2:35 remaining in the first quarter, the Rebels ended that quarter on a 10-1 scoring run. They led 23-12 at the end of one.

The Rebels opened that lead to 21 points at half-time when they went into the intermission up 47-26.

The Defenders came out the locker room at the half on a mission, cutting the lead to seven points on a Seymour lay-up with 2:02 remaining. They trailed just 59-52 at the end of three.

In the fourth quarter, the Rebels continued to hold the Defenders at bay, going on to win 82-72, overcoming a valiant effort by the Defenders.

The Rebels hit four more three-pointers than the Defenders in the game, finishing with six in total.

Following the division two game tonight, play in division one will get underway when the University of The Bahamas (UB) Mingoes (7-2) go up against the Uptown Cuts Specialists (3-6).
