A Haitian man accused of applying for two Bahamian birth certificates with a fake National Insurance Board (NIB) card has been denied bal.
Prosecutors say Sidney Similien, 36, of Gibbs Corner, presented NIB card number 15954846 to the Registrar General’s Department on November 30 and attempted to obtain birth certificates for Theria Similien and Similien Similien.
Similien pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of a forged document, uttering a forged document and attempted fraud by false pretenses when he appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.
Similien claims he was born in The Bahamas and had applied for naturalization; however, the prosecutor said there was no proof of his claim.
On learning that he was remanded to prison to await his trial on January 27, Similien said, through a creole interpreter, “I have nobody in The Bahamas to help me while in jail; I’d prefer to go back to Haiti.”
Forbes replied, “But I thought you were born in The Bahamas.”
Similien replied that his parents were dead.
