Junior sailors set to embark on historic course this Saturday

This coming Saturday, three Bahamian optimist junior sailors, Craig Ferguson II, Finley McKinney-Lambert and Mary Jac Nash, along with Coach Keir Clarke, will set out on a historic sail, from Montagu Bay to Lyford Cay.

The three junior sailors will be representing The Bahamas at the upcoming Junior Sailing Olympics Festival in Jensen Beach, Florida, USA, from December 7-8. The historic sail on Saturday is to raise funds needed to cover costs associated with getting the trio to the Junior Sailing Olympics Festival.

According to reports, no junior sailor has ever sailed this course, but the trio of sailors are up to the challenge. They recently made headlines, representing The Bahamas at the 2019 Optimist North American Championships, which were hosted by the Nassau Yacht Club in conjunction with the Bahamas Sailing Association (BSA) at Montagu Bay. That event wrapped up at the beginning of October.

Ferguson, 12, sails with the Bahamas National Sailing School (BNSS) and has been an active participant in the sport for the past three years. McKinney-Lambert, 9, also sails with the Bahamas National Sailing School and additionally with the Royal Nassau Sailing School. He has been an active participant in sailing for the past five years. Nash, 9, sails with the Lyford Cay International School and has sailed for the past two years.

All three are looking forward to competing at the Junior Sailing Olympics Festival next month.

The team along with Coach Keir met on Sunday past at Captain’s Table, Lyford Cay, to chart their course and discuss the various aspects associated with the sail. They will set sail at 7:30 a.m. from Montagu Bay, near the Nassau Yacht Club on East Bay, and head in a westerly direction. Based on the forecasted weather conditions, it is expected that the team will arrive at Lyford Cay at approximately 1:30 p.m. The team would have sailed a total of approximately 14 miles, once completed.
