A group of young talented Bahamian males took to the junior tennis circuit in Florida this past weekend.
Michael Major Jr. and Jackson Mactaggart participated in the under-14 (U14) category and Khai Rees, William McCartney and Patrick Mactaggart competed in the under-12 (U12) category at the USTA (United States Tennis Association) Level 7 Championships in Coral Springs, Florida.
Major emerged victorious in the U14 Division while Rees took home the title in the U12 Division.
Major shut out Tyler McKinnon in the round of 16, 6-0 and 6-0. In the quarters, he won in straight sets over Gabriel Tardio, 6-3 and 7-6(6). Major, who was unseeded, then defeated second seeded Kartick Gusain in the semifinals in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1. He would then go on to defeat third seeded Artiom Anzhilov in the final, 6-3 and 6-2, wrapping up the tournament by winning in straight sets in the final.
Also in the U14 Division, Jackson Mactaggart advanced it to the quarterfinals before falling. Jackson played well in the round of 16, winning easily over Jin Yang, 6-3 and 6-1. He played well in the quarters also, but lost to third seeded Anzhilov in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3.
In the U12 category, Rees, seeded third, recorded some impressive wins to come out on top. In the quarters, he won over seventh seeded Max Martin, 6-0 and 6-0, not yielding a single game. In the semis, Rees defeated Diar Amanbek, 6-1 and 6-2. In the final, Rees prevailed over second seeded Tristan Dion in a third set tiebreak, 6-7(6), 7-5 and 13-11.
Also in the U12 Division, McCartney received a walkover in the round of 32 and later defeated sixth seeded Athan Riesz in the round of 16, 6-2 and 7-5. In the quarterfinals, McCartney lost to second seeded Dion, 6-0 and 6-1. Patrick Mactaggart had a good win over Hunter Vandenhouten in the round of 32, winning 7-6(3) and 7-6(7). He put up a good fight in round of 16 but lost in a third-set tiebreak to eighth seeded Victor Pignaton, 6-1, 4-6 and 10-5.
