Man accused of trying to kill police

A resident of Elizabeth Estates is facing multiple charges after he allegedly opened fire on a patrol car with an assault rifle on May 5.

Antonio Cartwright, 31, of St. Lucia Crescent, appeared before Magistrate Shaka Serville yesterday charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of a firearm to prevent lawful arrest, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition.

Cartwright was not required to enter pleas to the charges and was remanded to custody. He returns to court on August 26.

Sergeant 3614 Danielle Gibson and PC 4318 Whitley Brown were on patrol in St. Lucia Crescent, when they allegedly saw a man brandishing an assault rifle.

The suspect fired at the officers and sped off in a car. However, other officers in the area captured the suspect a short time later and they recovered an AK-47 assault rifle with 21 rounds of .223 ammunition.
