Man accused of unlawful sexual intercourse takes plea deal

The case of a man who sexually molested a 10-year-old girl more than a decade ago ended without a trial on Thursday after he took a plea deal.

Under the agreement, Reginald Sweeting, who spent nearly four years in prison awaiting trial, won’t serve any additional prison time, provided he meets certain conditions.

Sweeting, 62, is required to pay his now-22-year-old victim $5,000 in compensation by December 5, 2022 and to keep the peace and be on good behavior for two years. A breach of either condition will result in Sweeting serving a default sentence of one year in prison.

Sweeting’s trial was set to begin before Senior Justice Bernard Turner on September 20; however, he pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse following plea negotiations.

Acting Deputy DPP Cordell Frazier told the court that on January 21, 2010, the victim went to Sweeting’s home to get an item for her grandmother. The girl went inside the residence after she met the door open. At first, the girl didn’t see Sweeting, but she felt someone pushing her from behind.

Sweeting pushed the child into a room and onto a bed, where he raped her. The matter was subsequently reported to the police and Sweeting was charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 14.

The judge convicted Sweeting after he agreed with the prosecutor’s summary of the case against him. Sweeting also said that he had entered into the plea agreement freely and voluntarily.

Sweeting was remanded to prison on February 2, 2010 and granted bail on December 6, 2013, with a total remand time of three years, nine months and two weeks.

Turner said that the recommended sentence of four years had been offset by the time Sweeting had spent on remand.

Sweeting was represented by Damien White.
