Man accused of violating bail gets bail

A man on bail for attempted murder on Wednesday denied that he refused to charge his ankle monitor four times this month.

Dion Excelant is wearing an ankle bracelet as a condition of his $15,000 bail for the April 23, 2022 shooting of Tarrico Bowleg in Pinewood Gardens.

Prosecutors allege that Excelant did not charge his tracking device on September 6, 13, 14, and 16.

Excelant pleaded not guilty to four counts of violation of bail conditions at his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans.

Prosecuting attorney Sergeant Mark Penn did not object to bail for Excelant because he has a clean criminal record.

Vogt-Evans reluctantly set his bail at $9,000 with two sureties with the requirement that he signs in at a police station three times per week.

She said it was “very ridiculous” that Excelant would once again be subject to monitoring, while facing a charge related to the monitor.

Excelant’s trial has been set for October 3. He is represented by Ciji Smith-Curry.
