A Haitian man accused of using a false document to apply for a spousal permit was yesterday refused bail.
Louizelien Louis, 39, of Union Village, appeared before Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux on charges related to marriage fraud. Prosecutors allege that Louis made a false declaration to a marriage officer on June 6, 2017 in order to obtain a marriage license.
It is further alleged that he possessed a false marriage certificate in his name and that of Indira Wilson on July 23, 2017 and that he uttered a forged document.
Prosecutors further allege that he attempted to obtain a spousal permit from the Department of Immigration by false pretenses.
With the assistance of Creole interpreter Charlene Jean, Louis elected trial before the magistrate and denied the charges. Turnquest-Deveaux set his matter for trial in January.
