Prosecutors have charged a man with statutory rape.
Lavado Thompson, 29, allegedly met his 12-year-old victim on the popular social media app Snapchat. As the child is under 16, she could not legally consent to sex.
Thompson is also charged with child pornography after prosecutors claim he had a photo of the child’s vagina.
Thompson did not have to enter a plea to the charges of unlawful sexual intercourse and child pornography when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt Thursday.
The magistrate refused him bail because she lacks the authority to grant bail for the charges.
However, Thompson can apply for pre-trial release in the Supreme Court.
Thompson next returns to court on October 14.
