Man jailed for attempted break-in at officer’s home

A policeman caught a thief as he tried to break into his home on Monday.

Dennis Darville, 48, of Augusta Street, pleaded guilty to charges of attempted housebreaking, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer at his arraignment before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain yesterday.

Superintendent Mark Barrett, commanding officer of the Grove Police Station, was at home when he heard a noise at his front door.

When Barrett came downstairs to investigate, he met Darville trying to jimmy his door open.

The officer opened the door and held onto Darville and took him into custody after a brief struggle.

Swain sentenced Darville to two years’ imprisonment on the attempted housebreaking charge and imposed sentences of three months on the remaining counts.

The sentences will be served at the same time.
