Man sent to Sandilands after court outburst

A homeless man accused of breaking into the same doctor’s office three times was yesterday remanded to the Sandilands Rehabilitation Center for psychiatric evaluation.

Despite not having a fixed address, Anthony Smith was clean and well-groomed at his initial appearance before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

Concerns were raised about the 61-year-old’s ability to plead after he made an outburst in court.

Forbes was dealing with another case when Smith shouted, “Who is Jesus Christ? [Expletive deleted] him. Jesus, I don’t like him. These spirits just keep bothering me.”

Although Smith appeared to be hearing voices, he still appeared in touch with reality as he provided his name when asked by the court.

Smith returns to court on February 4 for a report on his ability to plead to the charge.

He is accused of breaking into Embassy Medical Health Centre on Patton Street on October 31, 2019; between November 5 and 6, 2019; and between November 27 and November 28, 2019.

During the final break-in, Smith allegedly stole soap, face towels and toothpaste from the office.
