Four University of The Bahamas (UB) Mingoes players scored in double figures on Friday, leading them past the BIBT Great Whites 84-40 in New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) Division I action.
Kemsy Sylvestre led all scorers with 17 points in the one-sided affair; Tyler Moncur aided in the win with 15 points; Christoph McKenzie had 11 and Robert Joseph scored 10. McKenzie also led all rebounders with 11.
The Mingoes never trailed in the game. Led by Sylvestre, the Mingoes started the game on a 12-2 scoring run. Sylvestre had six points in the first four minutes of the game. The Mingoes ended the first quarter up 21-8 and never looked back.
Moncur, with a career-high 15 points, said the team wanted to send a message to the Rockets who they share the same record with in the Vince Ferguson Division in NPBA Division I basketball. Both teams have a 12-2 win-loss record.
“We know that they’re coming,” he said of the Rockets who they play in about two weeks. “We wanted to let them know that we’re ready for them.”
The Mingoes and Discount Distributor Rockets have the same record but the Mingoes, by virtue of defeating the Rockets 82-80 on November 23, own the tiebreaker in the Vince Ferguson Division at the moment.
Mingoes Head Coach Bacchus Rolle said he was pleased with the bench’s performance on Friday and hopes that it carries over into the playoffs.
“These guys are getting into the flow,” he said. “They got comfortable very quickly and did well.”
Trevez Hamilton had eight points and Marc Taylor had nine rebounds for the Great Whites in the loss. The Great Whites have yet to win a game this year at 0-12.
The Mingoes play again at 9 p.m. on Friday February 21, when they take on the Rockets at the A.F. Adderley Gymnasium.
