A mother has been charged with child neglect as prosecutors allege that her boyfriend is criminally responsible for her toddler’s death last week.
Prosecutors charged a 17-year-old with manslaughter in the March 8 death of Joyce Fleuridor, aged one year and five months, on Exuma.
On the same date, prosecutors say that Guetley St. Fleur, 22, neglected her child in a manner that resulted in unnecessary suffering.
The child was not breathing when she was taken to the island’s clinic, according to police. An autopsy revealed that the toddler had internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma.
The teen was not required to enter a plea to the manslaughter charge when he made his initial court appearance on Monday since the matter can only be tried in the Supreme Court.
He was denied bail, but his lawyer, Damian White, is expected to apply for emergency bail because he’s a minor.
The teen returns to court on May 21 for the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment that will move the case to the Supreme Court for trial.
For her part, St. Fleur denied the child neglect charge.
She returns to court today for a bail application.
