Insurance industry pioneers will be honored next week as the General Agents and Managers Association (GAMA) International establishes its first Caribbean chapter in The Bahamas.
GAMA, which is dedicated to the development of leadership skills for those in the insurance and financial services industry, is set to have a series of events running from February 26 to 28, inclusive of an educational seminar for industry professionals and an awards recognition banquet.
Colina Insurance Branch Manager Kino McCartney will serve as the new chapter’s president and said insurance, investments and financial services industry stakeholders from around the world will be in town for the momentous occasion under the theme “Bridging the Gap – Past, Present and Future”.
“When many of the companies here had foreign links, they had training departments that benefited their company and the industry greatly,” McCartney said during a press conference at Colina’s head office. “The objective of GAMA Bahamas is to re-establish those links and to provide the leadership and training for our agency managers so we can actually build the industry.
“Not only are we preparing our leaders and managers to be the best that they can be, but also for the consumer, to ensure that we educate our consumers so that they get the proper training and advice.”
Michael Adderley, GAMA Bahamas’ first vice president, said GAMA International is tapped into a wide range of training and development opportunities for industry professionals that the new chapter plans on making available to agents in The Bahamas.
“This is a management training organization,” Adderley said.
“We believe that through training and development each company will benefit as a result of that. We want our agents to become true professionals. And true professionals need constant training and accreditation. Therefore, we want to be the hub to provide the continued educational training to develop our agents.”
CFAL President Anthony Ferguson and Colina Insurance Executive Vice President Emmanuel Alexiou are among a list of industry executives who will be honored.
Also to be honored during the awards gala at Baha Mar’s Convention Center on February 28 at 7 p.m. will be Keith Major, of Family Guardian, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Other awardees will include Gerald Strachan, of Family Guardian, and Chester Cooper and John Wilson, QC, of BAF Financial.
The annual GAMA conference draws more than 3,000 field leaders and industry executives representing more than 50 insurance and investment companies from around the world.
