Pastor accused of defaming police commissioner granted bail

Pastor Julian Johnson was released on $1,000 bail yesterday after he spent the night in prison.

Johnson, 50, of Parkgate Road East, is charged with intentional libel after he accused Police Commissioner Paul Rolle of sexually assaulting female officers in a Facebook live broadcast last month.

Prosecutors allege that Johnson intended to defame the commissioner with his comments.

Johnson has denied the charge.

Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt remanded Johnson to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services on Tuesday to give the prosecutor time to consider bail.

Ferguson-Pratt, who is off the island, assigned the matter to Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes in her absence.

Sergeant 3605 Samantha Miah told the court that after reviewing the file, she was satisfied that Johnson was a “suitable candidate for bail and not a flight risk”.

Forbes granted Johnson $1,000 bail and scheduled a July 28 trial date.
