Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said he would not be surprised if there is a decrease in the upcoming unemployment figures.
While speaking at a town hall meeting in Matthew Town, Inagua, on Wednesday night, Minnis said, “The economy continues to grow and I will dabble on that next week when we have the youth convention in New Providence at the Melia hotel.
“Because of the growth that is occurring, I would not be surprised at all when the employment stats are finally released. I will not be surprised if we see a decrease in unemployment, a further decrease.”
Minnis said the government has a number of programs which it intends to bring on stream. He said he would not be surprised if those initiatives had a positive impact on unemployment.
“I would not be surprised when the next unemployment statistics are released that you see further growth and a further decrease in our unemployment and that is good news,” Minnis said.
“That would be good news for our country so I will wait to see the unemployment statistics and I will not be surprised to see a decrease in unemployment.”
The national unemployment rate increased from 10 percent in May 2018 to 10.7 percent in November 2018, according to data released by the Department of Statistics in January.
Youth unemployment decreased from 24.1 percent in May 2018 to 23.1 percent in November 2018.
The Department of Statistics will release its most recent labor force figures today.
