PM thanks airline passengers for choosing Bahamas

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis on Saturday thanked fellow passengers aboard a Delta Airlines flight from New York to Nassau for choosing to visit The Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian.

“I just spoke at the United Nations yesterday and I told them that the best way they can assist The Bahamas in terms of our rebuilding, Nassau, our economic engine and touristic center has not been affected; if they can get the message out that we’re still functional, we’re still open for business and the more tourists [who] visit our shores can put us in a better position so that we can rebuild and get back to normal. So I want to thank you all personally for visiting The Bahamas,” said Minnis, speaking into the PA system.

He told the travelers that he hopes they have an excellent time in The Bahamas so they can tell relatives and friends that the country is still open for business.

Passengers applauded the prime minister’s statement.

Ministry of Tourism officials are also seeking to get the message out that the majority of The Bahamas was unscathed by the hurricane, which devastated parts of Abaco and Grand Bahama in early September.

“The majority of The Bahamas, including 14 of the most commonly visited islands, remains unaffected by the storm,” the ministry noted in a statement.

“The warm and friendly people of The Bahamas, along with hotel and travel partners, from Bimini to Nassau and Paradise Island, the Exumas to Inagua, are ready to welcome travelers with open arms.

“As the public seeks information on how they can best help the country recover, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation (BMOTA) urges consumers to know that the best thing they can do for the country, now more than ever, is simple: visit The Bahamas.”

Minister of Tourism Dionisio D’Aguilar said, “Maintaining a robust tourism industry will be vital in helping the country to recover and rebuild.”
