Prosecutors drop charges in firearms case

Prosecutors yesterday dropped charges against Keenan Newton, who was arrested last Tuesday after police found a gun and ammunition inside the apartment he shared with his cousin.

Newton’s cousin, Deangelo Saunders, pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition, possession of component parts of a firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm on Friday and was sentenced to three years in prison. That sentence could be extended by a year if Saunders doesn’t pay a $6,500 fine.

Acting on information, police executed a search warrant on the apartment at Dell Close in South Westridge on August 6. While searching a southeastern bedroom, the officers found a bag that contained a 9mm Ruger pistol, 23 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 45 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, a magazine for a 7.62 assault rifle and a 40mm magazine.

Saunders apologized for his actions in court and said that Newton did not know that the items were there.

Lennox Coleby represented Saunders and Murrio Ducille appeared for Newton. Samantha Miah prosecuted.
