Bahamian speedster Steven Gardiner cruised to victory in the opening round of the men’s 400 meters (m) at the 17th International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF) World Championships in Doha, Qatar today.
Gardiner, who ran a season’s best of 44.14 seconds in Poland a few weeks ago, did just enough to qualify for the semi-finals.
The 400m national record holder jogged the final 50 m and finished today’s race in 45.68 seconds at the Khalifa International Stadium.
Grand Bahamian Alonzo Russell, who ran in a faster heat, finished in a time of 45.91 seconds, but that was only good enough for fifth place.
Unfortunately, Russell did not advance to the semifinals.
