LIMA, Peru — Out of the gate for The Bahamas at the 18th Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, were Justin Roberts and Baker Newman, in men’s singles in the tennis competition. Tennis Team Manager, Derron Donaldson, the secretary-general of the Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC), attended a technical meeting Sunday afternoon and was briefed with the tournament draw and schedule.
The tennis sector of the games runs until Sunday, August 4, with the preliminaries leading into the semifinals and finals, for singles, doubles and mixed doubles the last few days. Roberts is new to continental play, but his career has been on an upswing and a breakthrough at this level is highly possible for him. Newman has had ample preparation inclusive of a pre-games training session in Peru.
Following tennis into competition for The Bahamas will be the members of the athletics and swimming teams, both disciplines, from August 6 to August 10. The judo schedule begins on August 8 with Sasha Ingraham to have her first match on August 9. Judo teammate Cynthia Rahming has an August 11 competition date.
The Pan Am Games tennis sector serves as a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. A gold or silver in singles would qualify Roberts and Newman for those Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, next year.
Also with an opportunity to qualify from Team Bahamas are swimmers and track and field athletes. Swimmers achieving A and B qualifying standards, established by the International Olympic Committee and FINA (International Swimming Federation), will qualify. As for athletics, required times and distances will be validated as qualifiers for the Olympic Games.
Roberts, who carried the flag for The Bahamas at the opening ceremony on Friday, and Newman, as of Sunday, were the only two athletes in the Pan Am Games Village. According to BOC executive and games observer Dorian Roach, most of the rest of the competitive personnel are due in this week.
BOC executives and team officials in Lima, are Secretary-General Donaldson, Chef de Mission D’Arcy Rahming Sr., Assistant Chef de Mission Oria Wood-Knowles, Team Manager Dawn Woodside-Johnson, observer Dorian Roach, fellow executive observer Robert Butler and Team Doctor Dr. Rickey Davis.
