The Bahamas to play in  Fed Cup in June 2020

The Bahamas’ Fed Cup team will be one of seven teams that will play in Event A in 2020 Fed Cup Americas Group II action from June 10-13, 2020, at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento Fred Maduro in Panama City, Panama.

The other teams that will be in the event are host country Panama, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvado and Uruguay. They will play in two pools in a round-robin format – one group with four teams and the other with three teams (Pools A and B).

The winner of each pool will advance to a championship match against each other, to determine which nation will advance to the Americas Group I.

The full team for The Bahamas is not known as yet, but two young ladies confirmed their spots on the team at the recently concluded Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association’s (BLTA) Giorgio Baldacci Open National Championships. They are the champion Kerrie Cartwright and the runner-up, teenager Sydney Clarke.

The other two players on the Fed Cup team will be the top two players from the BLTA’s Invitation Tournament, the date of which will be announced later.

In Event A, The Bahamas is the highest ranked team among the other nations with a world ranking of 50 as of November 11, 2019. Ecuador is ranked at number 53, Uruguay is ranked at number 69, Costa Rica is ranked at number 70 and Cuba is ranked at number 71. Host nation Panama is ranked at number 92.

Cartwright and Clarke were on the 2019 Fed Cup team along with Sierra Donaldson and Danielle Thompson. They made it to the final but lost 2-0 to Peru at the 2019 BNP Paribus Fed Cup in the Americas Group II Division.

An experienced Cartwright has the most singles win for The Bahamas in Fed Cup play with 19. She finished with two singles wins and one loss at this year’s Fed Cup tournament. Teaming up with Donaldson, she won her only match in doubles.

Clarke only played in doubles action and won her only match, also teaming up with Donaldson.

The Bahamas scored two wins in the pool stage against Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.

In April 2020, eight other teams will be battling in Event B at the Club de Tenis La Paz in La Paz, Bolivia, for the other spot in the Americas Group I. These teams are Barbados, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago.

Like Event A, those eight teams will play in a round-robin format, and the teams will be divided into two pools with four teams in each pool.

The winner of each pool will advance to a championship match against each other, to determine which nation will advance to the Americas Group I.

The Bahamas first played in the Fed Cup in 1990 and has reached the Americas Zone Group I a few times.
