Along Life's Road

The ‘twin’ effect

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. – Psalm 23:6

It is not a strange occurrence for women to give birth to multiple children. When my family moved to the Englerston area in 1959, not far from where we lived was a set of triplets and they are still alive. I have a family friend with triplets and they are the most talented group of boys.

There are many families in which giving birth to multiples is not the exception, but the norm. They would say that twins run in the family. But there have also been instances when twins were born and not accepted because family elders say it is not a family trait and the marriage was over as a result.

And then there have been instances in marriages, for whatever reason, parents fail to conceive naturally or suffer the tragedy of miscarriages, but imagine the joy when hope has faded, and the couple blessed with twins.

In our text today, deduced from the ever loving 23rd Psalm of David, the twins, “goodness and mercy” are for a lifetime.

Today, I want to use this psalm in reference to two people entering into a marriage.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the path of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

The marriage ceremony is over and the pastor pronounces that you are now husband and wife. As the wife you have been blessed with the most wonderful human being – generous, kind, loving and tender. He surprises you by taking you to exciting places. When you become despondent and low in spirit because you are experiencing medical difficulties and not being able to conceive, he does not abandon you but continues to believe in you and love and encourages you to wait on the Lord.

When evil tongues begin to hold gossip parties about you, the love of your husband is increased and he turns a deaf ear. The more they talk, the more tender he becomes.

Out of the darkness of despair, doom and gloom, how wonderful it is to experience real joy. Your husband – your shepherd, your protector, your lover who never left you is blessing you with lasting happiness – twins with the most beautiful names – “goodness and mercy.”

For such a providential gift, you will show your gratitude by serving your shepherd, your God, all the days of your life. You will never leave the homestead but will sing and praise until there is no more breath to breathe earthly air, and you are wafted into celestial air and be eternally presented with heavenly twins – “good and faithful” servant.
