Two appeal retaliation shooting verdict

Two men convicted of the retaliation shooting of three people have filed an appeal.

Shawn Knowles and Timothy Saunders were convicted of manslaughter in the July 30, 2011 shooting deaths of Edward Braynen, Chackara Rahming and Erica Ward.

The men received three concurrent sentences of 18 years for the crimes.

Prosecutors alleged that the killings were in retaliation for the July 12, 2011 murders of Kevin Forbes and Alwayne Leslie at a Haitian village off Montgomery Avenue.

Ward was pregnant with the child of Serrano Adderley, who was later convicted of the murders of Forbes and Leslie. Knowles is the nephew of Forbes.

During their brief court appearance, the convicts said that they needed lawyers.

The matter has been adjourned to January 20 for appointment of counsel and a fixture hearing.
